You Click With Your Heart

·

I took a picture as we walked along the beach in Boracay.  When I took it, I remembered a line I read about photography, “Your eyes tell you how to frame. Your heart tells you when to click.”

And over the years, I realized I take a particular shot.

For me, it’s the classic man on a journey image.  The subject is caught in a moment in time where he or she is moving from one point to the next. They entered the frame from the right and will exit it on the left, a little farther away.

I don’t do it consciously. I just find myself framing the shots this way and clicking at this moment. And when I think about why — or how this image “speaks to my heart” — this is what I come up with:

I see my life as a journey. And one that I take on foot.  Carrying the few things that are really important — memories, relationships, experiences.

I count as gift and luck that I have a chance to share the same road with fellow travelers.  Some roads shared are long and some are short.

And I realize, with a little melancholy, that the image of the man on a journey tells me that one day the journey will end… and that I & those close to me, will exit the frame.  It is my hope that when that time comes, I have left the earth with more than just footprints & photos.

We frame with our eyes. We click with our hearts.  What do we walk the journey of lives with?

  3. Jake, I love this post! I totally want to steal the tagline. Who do you attribute it to? It sums up everything perfectly. Hope our paths cross again soon.

  4. Hey Auey I was trying to find the guy who said it actually. I read it in a local Town & Country interview of a lawyer who gives photography seminars. I tried to find him on the net, but I couldn’t track him down.
